PHOTO PROMPT – Copyright-Björn Rudberg

Friday Fictioneers with host Rochelle Wisoff-Flelds is a great way to challenge yourself to write a story in 100 words from a photo prompt. Here’s my story for the week, you can check out many other wonderful stories at Rochelle’s website.

The Wonders of Nature

Aunt Hazel died at 99. I inherited her mansion.

Mum’s older sister had been more like a mother to her. When their parents died in an accident, she’d shielded her and fostered hope.

I alighted the bus alongside a dimpled mud brick wall, plodded the stairs toward her house, stumbled on an exposed tree root and marvelled at an odd tree that grew sideways. Weathered and bent over time from extreme conditions, the roots were surprisingly smooth and deeply planted. I looked up to the top level of Hazel’s house and smiled at the splash of pink paint facing outward.
